World record for paralympian Hannah Cockroft; ‘I honestly didn’t know that time was within me,’ she said.

Hannah Cockroft won her sixth gold medal in the T34 100m with a world record of 16.39 seconds.

“I honestly didn’t know that time was within me,” Cockroft, 29, said after her race.

“I knew that (silver medallist Kare Adenegan) was going to move out of the blocks, and I had to go with her as best I could.

“She just pulled a good time out of me.

“It has been coming, it has always been there hiding, it has just taken a few years to show its face.

“There was definite panic there,” Cockroft said of the race.”The 100m, when you’re sitting on that start line, looks so short. (Adenegan) went, and I thought, ‘I haven’t got enough time. I need 120’.

“We hadn’t raced together, so I had no idea how hard those girls were pushing. Kare and I had raced once this year. It was a real shock for everyone.”

The wheelchair athlete from the United Kingdom won two gold medals in London in 2012 and three more in Rio four years later.

Sunday’s victory puts her one step closer to equaling Baroness Tanni Grey-11 Thompson’s Paralympic medals from 1992 to 2004.

When asked if she thought she could beat Grey-Thompson, she said: “I’m halfway through the third game. Guys, I’m 29 years old. I’m not sure I’ll be able to complete another three Games.

“It’s in the distance, but it’s there. Since Tanni, the sport has evolved dramatically. She left an indelible mark on the world.

“All we have to do now is maintain bringing in more young females to the sport. It’ll be fantastic if I have to keep beating them.”

Adenegan, a 20-year-old Coventry native, had to settle for second place and a season’s best, which was still a long way from her lifetime best of 16.8 established in 2018

Introduction to wheelchair racing

After being turned away from sport throughout her primary education, Cockroft competed at secondary school in swimming, seated discus, and wheelchair basketball.

As a result of a silver medal performance in the seated discus at the UK School Games, she attended a British Paralympic Association talent day at Loughborough University in October 2007. Here, she was given her first opportunity to try an elite racing wheelchair by Dr. Ian Thompson, husband of former wheelchair racer Tanni Grey-Thompson.

Thompson went on to coach her for the first year of her career. In 2008 a dance academy she attended gave the proceeds from program sales at its annual show to help her buy her own racing chair, but when it arrived, its made-to-measure setup was incorrect, so her father, a welder, modified the wheelchair to fit.

After returning to the UK School Games that year, and taking gold in her first competitive 100m race

she was subsequently invited to join the Great Britain Paralympic Team shortly after the Beijing Paralympics. In 2009, Cockroft participated in her first-ever road race; the London Mini Marathon, taking the Champion title in the girls 14–19 age group category.

By 2010, Cockroft was being coached by Peter Eriksson, head Paralympic coach at UK Athletics. She again competed in the London Mini marathon, retaining her title as the female champion, and at the Knowsley disability athletics challenge in May, she broke her first World Record in the T34 400 meters, recording a time of 65.51 seconds.

2013

In 2013, Cockroft changed her coaching team to Australian-born Jenni Banks OAM.

On 28 July, Cockroft won the T33/T34 100 meters race at the Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium with a stadium record time of 17.80 seconds. Later that month, at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, Cockroft retained both her T34 100 meters and T34 200 meters titles.

Hannah was named in the 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist, coming 7th overall. She was the first Paralympian to ever be nominated for the award outside of a Paralympic year.
