Google tribute to John Tenniel in his 200th birthday

Recently, Google has tributed to the illustrator behind ‘Alice in wonderland‘ for his 200th birthday. The good folks at google are honoring him as the finest illustrator with a doodle. Today his works have won him a global audience and made him a household name.

Sir john Teniel was a very famous English illustrator and political cartoonist who was born on 28th February 1820. People used to remember him as the principal political cartoonist for the magazine named as punch for 50 years.


He is famous for his illustrations to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and What Alice Found There. Tenniel died on 25th February 1914. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery in London.

John Tenniel had a wife, Julia Giani who died after two years of their marriage. After the death of her wife, he exists alone.

Career Information

As a cartoon artist, he had won the opportunity to design the decoration of the new Palace of Westminster. The first book illustration by John Tenniel was The Book of British Ballads by Samuel Carter Hall, in 1842.

He had also contributed numerous cartoons and minor drawings. He had made ninety-two drawings for the tasks of Lewis Carroll’s. In 1861, he was offered John Leech’s position at punch as a political cartoonist.

His task was to follow the wilful choices of his punch editors, who likely took their cue from ‘The Times’. His cartoons of the 1860s popularised a portrait of the Irishman as a sub-human being, resembling an orangutan in facial features and posture.

Finally, he was retired in Jan 1901 and honored with a farewell banquet.

Family details

Tenniel was born in Bayswater, West London. He had his two brothers and three sisters. He was a very quiet person. While he was fencing with his father, he received a serious eye wound from his father’s foil. Gradually he lost his sight of the right eye by that accident.
