Damon Weaver, a student reporter at the time, landed an interview with then-President Barack Obama when he was 11 years old. The two spoke about education in America for ten minutes, covering everything from funding to whether Obama had the ability to improve school lunches. Weaver’s interview with Obama came after nearly a year of inquiries to the White House, during which he conducted several high-profile interviews, including with then-Senator Joe Biden, NBA star Dwyane Wade, and Oprah Winfrey.
Weaver’s reporting aimed to provide answers to his community. He inquired about Vice President Joe Biden’s position, Wade’s childhood and what advice he had for the students at Canal Point Elementary, and Winfrey’s experience working in “the popular talk show company.”

He could ask amusing questions and enjoyed being in the company of others.” Weaver, while being a reporter, was contacted by other news agencies in 2009, including several of the major cable networks, NPR, and The Associated Press.

“I like being a reporter because you get to learn a lot of things. you get to meet nice people and you get to travel a lot,” Weaver told the AP.
