David Card along with Joshua Angrist and Guido Imbens got awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics, 2021.

On Monday, three economists from the United States were awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for their work in determining the cause and impact of real-world economic events.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences split this year’s prize in half between David Card of the University of California at Berkeley and two other economists, Joshua Angrist of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Guido Imbens of Stanford University, in Stockholm.

The men will split a total of 10 million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million).

Card was recognized for his groundbreaking contributions in the field of labor economics. According to the prize committee, Angrist and Imbens were honored for their methodological contributions to the understanding of causal linkages.

The event was broadcast live on the university’s website.

Card’s research on the impact of wages on employment was noted by the committee. He studied employment patterns near the border with Pennsylvania after New Jersey raised its minimum wage in 1992 and determined that the higher wage had not deterred hiring.

Card’s findings challenged common thought and prompted more research, which found that a company’s behavior typically outweighs the impact of pay regulation.

According to the committee, Angrist and Imbens established a framework that demonstrates what “exact inferences” can be taken from observations, which has been widely adopted by researchers working with observational data.

Peter Fredriksson, chair of the Economic Sciences Prize Committee said, “Card’s studies of core questions for society and Angrist and Imbens’s methodological contributions have shown that natural experiments are a rich source of knowledge. Their research has substantially improved our ability to answer key causal questions, which has been of great benefit to society,”

According to the committee, the three economists have transformed empirical work in the social sciences.

“I was absolutely thrilled to hear the news,” told Imbens, who noted that the three men are friends and that Angrist had been the best man at his wedding.

By phone, the Stanford economist joined the award press presentation.

According to a Nobel tweet, Card received the news in a phone call from Adam Smith of the Nobel committee, who “suspected might be a made-up name.'” Card was photographed getting the news in a bathrobe in a photo made by his wife, Cynthia Gessle.
