Edith Eger is the youngest daughter of Lajos and Ilona Elefánt, Jewish immigrants from Hungary who lived in what was then Czechoslovakia at the time of her birth. Her father used to be a tailor. Edith Eger was an enthusiastic person towards ballet.

Before June 1920 and after 1938, Eger’s hometown, Kosice, was part of Hungary and was known as Kassa. Eger went to gymnasium high school and studied ballet. She competed for Hungary on the Olympic gymnastics squad.

When the Hungarian government passed new anti-Jewish policies in 1942, she was kicked off the gymnastics squad. Clara, her elder sister, was a violinist who was accepted into the Budapest Conservatory. Clara was concealed by her music teacher throughout the war.  Magda, her sister, was a pianist.

After coming to America, Eger became friends with Viktor Frankl, entered therapy, and got her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1978. She also obtained her license to practice psychology. She founded a treatment clinic in La Jolla, California, and was added to the University of California, San Diego’s faculty.

Eger returned to Auschwitz in 1990 to confront her repressed emotions. In 2017, she published her first book, The Choice, at the encouragement of Philip Zimbardo. In her work as a psychotherapist, Eger assists her clients in breaking free from their own thoughts and finally choosing freedom.

The novel The Choice was a New York Times and Sunday Times best-seller. In her second book, The Gift (2020), she encourages the reader to modify the ideas that, according to Eger, imprison us, as well as the damaging habits that would impede us.

She believes that what happens to us in life is not the most important thing in the end. Rather, what we do with our lives is the most essential thing.

During the War

Eger was forced to live in the Koice ghetto with her parents and Magda in March 1944. They were forced to spend a month in a brick factory with 12,000 other Jews in April. According to her memoirs, Eger spent time in different concentration camps, including Mauthausen. As the Americans and Russians advanced, the Nazis evacuated Mauthausen and other concentration camps. Eger and her sister Magda were forced on a 55-kilometer death march to the Gunskirchen concentration camp.

When she couldn’t go any further owing to tiredness, one of the girls she’d shared Mengele’s bread with recognized her and helped her along with Magda. In Gunskirchen, conditions were so poor that Eger had to eat grass to survive, while other prisoners succumbed to cannibalism.

According to Eger, when the US soldiers liberated the camp in May 1945, she was left for dead amidst a lot of dead bodies. After witnessing her hand move, a soldier is alleged to have rescued her. The soldier sought medical assistance immediately and saved her life. She weighed 32 kg and had a fractured back, typhoid fever, pneumonia, and pleurisy at the time.

After the war

Edith and Magda were treat in American field hospitals before returning to Kassa to find their sister Clara. Their parents, as well as Edith’s fiancée Eric, were kill in Auschwitz. Béla (Albert) Eger, whom she met in the hospital, became her husband. He was also a survivor of the Holocaust who had joined the partisans during the war.

Following communist threats, they emigrated to the United States with their daughter in 1949. There, she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and survivor guilt, and she refused to discuss the conflict with her three children.
