Bailey was licensed in Florida and Massachusetts for the most of his career, where he was disbarred in 2001 and 2003, respectively. He was forbidden from practicing law in Massachusetts and Florida after misbehaving while defending Claude Louis DuBoc. The Maine Board of Bar Examiners and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court both refused him a law license in 2014.

Bailey’s son, Bendrix confirmed his father’s death, which occurred in hospice care. However, he did not reveal the cause. He added that his father had been in terrible health in recent years and had relocated to Georgia to be closer to another son, Scott.

Simpson tweeted on Thursday, describing Bailey as one of the great lawyers of the time, along with a video of himself talking about the lawyer, “I lost a great one. F Lee Bailey you will be missed.”
