The US announced on Thursday that its force strength at the Kabul airport has risen to over 5200 and that the city’s Hamid Karzai International Airport is “safe and open for flight operations.” Major General William “Hank” Taylor, the deputy director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, delivered the statements during a press conference at the Pentagon.

“The US military presence at Kabul Airport has grown to nearly 5200 troops. The Kabul Airport is safe and open for business. “We have evacuated roughly 7000 total evacuees since the start of evacuation operations on August 14,” Major General Taylor stated at the press event, according to news agency ANI.

“However, if we go back to the end of July when the Department of Defense began to assist the State Department with the flow of Special Immigrant Visas, we have a total of 12,000 people who have left Afghanistan,” he continued.
