Hundreds of mourners gather in Lincoln for funeral of well-known traveller mum and son
The burial of two well-known travelers drew hundreds of people to Lincoln city center. Today, Ryalla Duffy and her son Absolom Duffy are buried at the cathedral. As the gold coffins were brought in for the service, people lined the streets to pay their respects.
As highways were closed to make room for the funeral procession, Lincolnshire Police advised vehicles of long traffic delays in the city center. Ryalla, who was aged 61, was a founding member of the National Federation of Gypsy Liaison Groups and for more than 20 years ran a travelers’ camp in Saxilby.
The event is being managed by the council in collaboration with the police.
More than 1,000 mourners are expected in Lincoln for the funeral of a prominent member of the gypsy traveler community, so drivers can expect delays. The funeral is scheduled for August 17 in Lincoln Cathedral, and Lincolnshire County Council has posted multiple road signs warning vehicles to expect delays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on that day. Absolom (Absy) Duffy, Ryalla’s son who worked as a tree surgeon and died tragically in a car accident on July 8, will also be recognized.
“We have been made aware of a funeral ceremony taking place at Lincoln Cathedral on Tuesday, August 17 that could have a very high attendance,” said Mick Phoenix, Lincolnshire County Council traffic manager.
“We’ve been working with Lincolnshire Police to prepare, and we’ve put out advance warning signs to let drivers know that there could be very slow-moving traffic and long delays in the city, especially around the funeral procession route between Saxilby and Lincoln Cathedral, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” says the statement.
“If you’re traveling into or around Lincoln on Tuesday, give yourself extra time or take a different route.”
